The original of this print of the sinking of the Stonefleet off Charleston,
South Carolina, was published in Harper's Weekly in 1862. The remains of several
vessels
from this fleet were discovered by Dr. E. Lee Spence and the late Ron Reneau.

Artifacts:
The artifacts in this collection range from bronze cannon, binnacles, bells and ships' wheels to bone tooth brushes, clay pipes, pins, buttons and dinnerware. These items are used to train students to date and thus help identify shipwrecks.

Wreck Files:
This portion of Sea Research Society's Spence Archives contains E. Lee Spence's hand-written notes on thousands of shipwrecks around the world. It also contains copies of ship's registries, enrollments and licenses as well as many pertinent news articles and other related documents.Note 2: Library use of the Spence Archives and Nielsen Collection is limited to current IDI students and Board Members and is by appointment only.
Note 3: At the actual library, students can read about and research virtual every dive related topic from sunken treasure to the evolution of diving gear. Some documents are confidential and are not available to students as they touch on current and/or future projects of Dr. E. Lee Spence.
Note 4: All collections are actually owned by the Sea Research Society and are on loan to the International Diving Institute.
